Sashtiabthapoorthi, Sadhabishegam, Dhandeeswaram, Velachery

Dhandeeswaram Temple situated at Velachery (Vedhasreny Original Name), where one can perform his Sashtiapdhapoorthi, Bheemaradha santhi, Sadhabishekam Functions. This Temple is owned by Tamilnadu's Hindu Religious & Charitable Endowments Department. The main deities of the temple are Sri Dhandeeswarar, Karunambigai. The temple would have been constructed around 10th Century AD.

Temple History

Mythology says that Lord Yama, having lost his strength, vitality after getting punished by Lord Shiva at Thirukadaiyur at the behest of saving the life of sage Markandeya, creates a Tank (Yema Theertham), installs Shiva Lingam near the Tank, and fervently prayed to Lord Shiva for forgiveness and restoration of his strength so that he can carry on his duties on full measure. Pleased by his prayers Lord Shiva brings back is dhandam (Scepture), restores his strength. Hence the name Dhandeeswarar.

The other incident considered here is 4 Vedas were hidden by Hiranyaksha under the sea. These 4 vedhas performed prayers to this Lord Dhandeeswarar to get rid of Asura dhosha.

Godess of Dhandeeswarar is Karunambikai.

Sashtiabdhapoorthi/Sadhabishegam

After Thirukadayur, I feel this is the best place to perform rituals for Sashtiabdhapoorthi/Sadhabishegam Function. During the human life time, as per Hindu traditions, we used to perform functions for,
  • 1st year completion Ayushya homam,
  • Completion of 59th year Ugra radha santhi
  • Completion of 61st year Sashtiabdha poorthi,
  • Completion of 69th year Bhimaradha Santhi,
  • Completion of 77th year and 7 months 7 days Vijaya radha santhi
  • At the end of 80 years and 8 months or 1000 full moon days Sadhabishegam
  • At the completion of 100 years Kanakabishegam.
These are the save points in our life, to thank the immortal and pray for further strength and happiness to the person and his entire family.

Pooja Procedure

Rudra Ekadhasani

This is the first day ritual starting with MahaGanapathi pooja. This day all functions and rituals will be performed to Dhandeeswarar and karunambigai. All functions are done at vedha vinayagar mandapam which is at the entrance of the temple.

The first day rituals include,
  • Mahaganapathi pooja
  • Ekadhasa rudra abhishekam for Dhandeeswarar and karunambigai,
  • Vasurdharai,
  • Poorna aahoothi
  • Kalasabishekam
You wont believe, the priests were reciting mantras patiently and  we were seated inside the sanctum. When 20 ppl were recieting the Rudra, Chamakam japams, the room was heavily vibrant and you can realise the energy getting inside your body. Never had such experience earlier.

The abhishekam items (Milk, Ghee, Turmeric, Curd, etc) were kept inside the pots (contents will be atleast 5 litres) and once each rudra japam is completed, each pot's content is poured on top of Lord Shiva. I am sure this will give you a rich experience.

Then Vasurdharai, Kalasabishekam will be completed. Once the rituals are over, 11 chitrannas were distributed as prasadam. This calls the day for Rudra Ekadhasani

Sashtiabdhapoorthi

The second day ritual will be the sashtiabdhapoorthi. This day, the poojas/rituals are for the person who completed 60th birthday.

Following are the functions performed

  • Ganapathi poojai
  • Ko Poojai
  • Nandhi
  • Dasa dhanam
  • Poorna Aahoothi
  • Abishekam with kalasa water
  • Mangalya dharanam

Kurukkal at the temple is very soft and answers all queries. We were immense happy with the arrangements done at the temple. The lunch and breakfast arrangements were taken care by the priests. Toilet Facilities, dress change rooms are also available.

I will say best place in chennai for sashtiabdhapoorthi or sadhabishekam is Dhandeeswaram temple.
